Principle 5: Strengthening Global South Voices in International Forums
Principle 5.1 Enhancing Diplomatic Engagement
Diplomatic engagement is essential for advancing the interests of the Global South in international forums. Countries
should work together to amplify their collective voice on global issues such as trade, climate change, and development
finance.
a. Coalition Building: Strengthen coalitions within international organisations, such as the United Nations, World
Trade Organization (WTO), and International Monetary Fund (IMF), to advocate for policies that benefit the Global
South. For example, the G77 and China coalition has been instrumental in advancing the development agenda
within the UN.
b. Active Participation in Global Governance: Encourage active participation in global governance structures by
increasing the representation of Global South countries in key decision-making bodies. This includes advocating for
reforms in institutions such as the IMF and World Bank to reflect the changing global economic landscape.
c. Public Diplomacy and Soft Power: Utilise public diplomacy and soft power to enhance Global South countries’
global image and influence. Cultural diplomacy, international media, and academic exchanges can help build
positive perceptions and strengthen diplomatic ties.
Principle 5.2 Advocating for Fairer Global Trade and Finance Systems
Global South countries should advocate for fairer trade and finance systems that address the structural inequalities in
the global economy. This includes pushing for reforms in international trade rules, debt relief, and development finance.
a. Reforming Global Trade Rules: Advocate for reforms in global trade rules that address the needs of developing
countries. This includes addressing issues such as agricultural subsidies in developed countries, which distort
international markets and disadvantage farmers in the Global South.
b. Debt Relief and Restructuring: Call for comprehensive debt relief and restructuring mechanisms for heavily
indebted countries in the Global South. The COVID-19 pandemic and recurrent geopolitical conflicts with global
spillovers have exacerbated debt vulnerabilities, making it imperative for the international community to take action.
c. Development Finance Reforms: Push for reforms in development finance to ensure that financial flows are
aligned with the Global South’s development priorities. This includes increasing concessional finance, improving aid
effectiveness and mobilising private sector investment.
Strengthening the geoeconomic strategies of the Global South requires a multifaceted approach that addresses a
comprehensive matrix, as suggested above. By working along these principles, Global South countries can enhance
their geoeconomic prospects and assert their influence in the global arena more effectively. As the global order continues
to evolve, the ability of the Global South to adapt to changing circumstances and leverage new opportunities will be
critical to achieving long-term prosperity and stability.
