Principle 3.2 Embracing Emerging Technologies
Emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and renewable energy, offer significant opportunities
for the Global South to leapfrog traditional development pathways and drive innovation.
           a. AI and Automation: Encourage the adoption of AI and automation in critical sectors such as agriculture,
manufacturing, and healthcare. Governments can create favourable AI research and development policies and
partnerships with international tech companies and research institutions. For densely populated countries in
the Global South, the rapid deepening of AI-based technologies presents a complex challenge as job market
restructuring outpaces re-training efforts. Countries like China, which are better equipped to capitalise on these
advancements, can aid other developing nations that face resource constraints in adapting their workforce.
           b. Blockchain for Governance and Finance: Explore the use of blockchain technology to enhance governance
and financial systems. Blockchain can improve transparency, reduce corruption, and facilitate secure financial
transactions. Examples include using blockchain for land registries in Ghana and financial inclusion in Kenya through
               mobile banking platforms. 92,93
           c. Renewable Energy Innovation: Invest in renewable energy technologies to address energy needs sustainably.
The Global South has the potential to become a leader in renewable energy production, particularly in solar and
wind power, as demonstrated by countries like Brazil. 94

           Principle 4: Fostering Sustainable Development

Principle 4.1 Implementing Green Growth Strategies
Green growth strategies are essential for achieving sustainable development while addressing environmental challenges.
The Global South should prioritise policies that promote renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and the circular
           economy.
           a. Renewable Energy Expansion: Scale up investments in renewable energy infrastructure, such as solar, wind,
and hydropower. Countries like Ethiopia and Brazil have successfully increased their renewable energy capacity,
contributing to energy security and reducing carbon emissions. 95
           b. Sustainable Agriculture Practices: Promote sustainable agriculture practices that enhance productivity while
conserving natural resources. Techniques such as agroforestry, conservation agriculture, and organic farming can
improve food security and resilience to climate change.
           c. Circular Economy Initiatives: Support the transition to a circular economy by encouraging recycling, waste
reduction, and the sustainable use of resources. This can be achieved through regulations, incentives, and public
               awareness campaigns.

Principle 4.2 Addressing Climate Change and Environmental Protection
Given the region’s vulnerability to its impacts, addressing climate change is a critical priority for the Global South. Policies
should focus on climate adaptation, mitigation, and environmental protection.
           a. Climate Adaptation Strategies: Develop and implement national adaptation plans that address the specific
climate risks faced by Global South countries. This includes investments in climate-resilient infrastructure, water
               management, and disaster risk reduction.
           b. International Climate Finance: Advocate for increased international climate finance to support adaptation and
mitigation efforts in the Global South. Developed countries must fulfil their commitments under the Paris Agreement
to provide financial support to vulnerable countries.
           c. Biodiversity Conservation: Prioritise biodiversity conservation through protected areas, sustainable land use
practices, and the restoration of degraded ecosystems. Biodiversity is crucial for maintaining ecosystem services
and supporting livelihoods in rural communities.
